File Management using the FTP client FileZilla – (Part 2)

This is the continuation of our previous post: Configure-FileZilla. In this post, I’ve explained the basic usage of FileZilla to manage your files.

Below is an image of the FileZilla interface. I have split it into sections to make it easier to explain and understad:

  • Section 1: This is the log section. You can check this section for errors or other logs
  • Section 2 and 3: These sections allow you to access Folders and Files on your computer. Upon right clicking on any file in this section will bring up an option panel as shown below:

    • Upload: You can right-click on either a folder or a file in this section and then click on ‘Upload’, to upload that folder/file to the server (File will be uploaded to the folders shown in section 4 and 5).
    • Open/Edit file: (This will open the file in your default application associated with the type of file you’re trying to view or edit. For example, a text file will be opened in notepad)
    • Create a file/directory: Lets you create a new file and folder. The option create a directory and open it, will create the folder and open the folder for you.
    • Refresh: To reload the tab and check the changes
    • Delete or rename a file/folder:These options let you either delete of rename a file
  • Section 4 and 5: These sections allow you to access Folders and Files on your server. Upon right clicking on any file in this section will bring up an option panel as shown below:

    • Download: You can right-click on either a folder or a file in this section and then click on ‘Download’, to download that folder/file to the computer (File will be downloaded to the folders shown in section 2 and 3). You are also provided with other option like add files to download queue, which will add the selected file/folder to the queue (section 6) where you can manage the file transfer.
    • View/Edit file: (This will open the file in your default application associated with the type of file you’re trying to view or edit. For example, a text file will be opened in notepad)
    • To make sure that your changes are saved on the server after editing, once you save the file, you will be prompted by FileZilla with an alert as shown below:

      Click on Yes to save the changes on server.

    • Create a directory/File: Lets you create a new file and folder. The option create a directory and open it, will create the folder and open the folder for you.
    • Refresh: To reload the tab and check the changes
    • Delete or rename a file/folder:These options let you either delete of rename a file
    • Permissions: You can change the File/Folder Permissions using this option

  • Section 6: This section will display the current activity. It will display the transfer rate and other information regrading the file / folder, when you upload or download files. You can also Stop, Start and Pause the curet queue here. You will need to click on ‘Failed Transfer tab to check the failed transfer logs’

Replacing a file: If you try to upload or download a file that already exists in the folder that you’re trying to save it to, FileZilla will open up an alert asking you to chose if you would like to overwrite the file. At this point, you will need to click on ‘OK‘ to overwrite the file or you will need to select the last option that says ‘Skip’ and then click on ‘OK‘ to skip overwriting

If you’re uploading a gorup of files, you can select the appropriate action fron the action tab and then check the checkbox that says ‘Always use this action’ or ‘Apply to current queue only'(recommended) before clicking on ‘OK
